Beyond the Headlines
Many people come to UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun with questions, or assumptions shaped by what they've heard. Watch audience members share what surprised them, what questions the film answered, and why they left seeing the story differently.
For more than 20 years, Shen Yun has been the target of a coordinated campaign by the Chinese Communist Party to discredit and suppress the company. That campaign has included propaganda originating from China, as well as false narratives that have later been echoed by major U.S. media outlets.

In UNBROKEN , the film presents the story of Shen Yun that has never been presented in mainstream media. For example, the New York Times ran a series of 12 articles on Shen Yun and never once included stories from parents, family members, doctors who treated Shen Yun dancers for injuries that are typical for any elite performing arts company. Those serious omissions, plus undisclosed ties to the CCP were part of the catalyst for Fiona Young and her documentary team to investigate the story.
"Why would the New York Times do that?"

"Makes me look at things a lot differently."

UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun celebrated its world premiere at the AMC Lincoln Square to a full house.
Many among the audience professed shock after walking out from the screening.
“Shen Yun is a portrait of an ancient society that has been dismantled and broken down by a regime that didn’t believe in freedom,” TV producer Maria Cavenaghi said. “The fact that these artists persevered through all of this, and they still perform, and they still make this magic happen, it says so much."
